Pendaflex Plastic File Pockets Heavy Duty By Joan Young on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
These Pendaflex file pockets are heavy duty, colorful and expandable to one inch. They have a couple of annoying factors.
I recently decided to make a hot file section near my desk with folders that would slide upright into slots. I wanted file pockets so that the papers would not fall out the ends. I wanted various colors because I can quickly grab the correct file by noting its color. They needed to be plastic because I had determined that manila folders were just a little too soft and would bend in the slots.
I purchased one package (4) of these pockets, and one similar style from Globe-Weis. I have reviewed those pockets separately. I can't decide which I like better.
This package of four Pendaflex folders came from Wal-Mart. The colors are purple, deep green, yellow, and magenta. They hold 8.5 x 11" papers, and are very lightly textured so they don't slip out of your hands too easily. They expand to 1" thick, and will supposedly hold 150 sheets of paper, although if you put this many sheets in, it would be packed very solidly and might be fine for storage, but not for everyday use.
The outside dimensions of the folder are 9.5 inches by 11.75 inches. They each have a back tab which extends across the length of the folder, and a center cut, semi-circular notch to allow you to grab papers easily.
The folder is expandable because there is an accordion fold in each side and the bottom.
The plastic is slightly heavier than that of the Globe-Weis pockets. Since it's stiffer it might be more likely to crack with use, but I haven't had them long enough to know this for sure.
These are just about perfect, but there are two things that annoy me. First of all, I stuck a regular sticky label on the edge of each folder so I could see the label when it was inserted in the vertical file rack. The texturing on the plastic makes it so that the label tends to peel.
The other annoying feature is the accordion folded edges. This means that there is a stiff pleat of plastic projecting into the folder space. Not too big of a deal, but it does sometimes bind on full sheets of paper when you are trying to slip them in and out easily.
Pendaflex also makes pockets which expand much farther with more accordion folds.

I've never tried the plastic version, but I do like the cardboard ones. I may have to try these as they would last longer. Too bad about the labels peeling off. Can you write directly on the folder with a Sharpie or something? I guess that would not be helpful if you are changing subjects, but I would be using them for bills and such.
funny but I just purchased the very same folders on Monday hoping to get more organized at work. You've said everything I've been saying since I purchased them! I guess I'm back to searching for the perfect plastic file folder.
