Plastic-Coated Dumbbells Not a Good Choice
By Joan Young onDont buy any dumbbells that are like this if you can help it.
These were given to me as a gift.I suspect that they were part of some larger inexpensive set of some weight bench or exercise product.
They arent bad enough to throw out.I keep them in the upstairs bathroom in case I get motivated to do a few exercises when Im up there.
These are 3 pound and 5 pound hand weights in the standard dumbbell shape. However the coating is a smooth black plastic. They tend to slip in your hands which I dont like at all.In fact, it might even make them a little more dangerous, especially in the summer. If one slips out of your grip and falls on a foot that could be a big ouch!
Also, the edges of the larger ends arent shaped as nicely as better sets.To be fair I have to say that they are very slightly hexagonal. They dont quite roll away by themselves on a dead level surface. But the amount of shaping is so minimal that they do roll very easily, and would never stay put on anything with a slight incline to it.
I dont want to hurt the feelings of the person who gave these to me.He was so proud that he had found a gift he thought I would like. But if it werent for that I would probably send them to goodwill.I much prefer my Neoprene Coated Dumbbells.

Good point - I would hate to drop one of those dumbbells on my foot! Ouch!
My faves are the neoprene's as well - I looked at ones like these but eliminated them the minute I picked them up - definitely not into foot throbs when they fall :) Thanks for the info
yea i did that once.lol i was at walmart, picked one up, and accidently dropped it! it didn't hit the floor but everyone stared at me. it was kinda funny..:)
wait, it did hit the floor, it didn't hit my foot though. thats what i meant.
