Ash Ketchum, finally ten years old, gets to begin his Pokemon journey. That's right, this DVD release features the very first episodes of the phenomenally popular Pokemon TV show. 26 of them, in fact. These episodes feature many great moments in the series, from Ash catching a great number of Pokemon to the introduction of Misty and Brock.

The video quality on this release is pretty good. The series has held up pretty well, with only some patches of darkness here and there. Special features are more or less nonexistant, save for the famous PokeRap, which you can access at the end of each disc.

The case type is something that could have definitely been improved. The release comes in three standard size DVD cases. In a world where DVD season sets released in thinpaks are becoming more and more the norm, having three discs in three clunky cases isn't the best idea, especially since the company, VIZ, has done much better in the past with their releases. With the first season consisting of 3 box sets with 3 discs each, that's a lot of room taken up on the old shelf. Here's hoping they rerelease it in the future in a more pleasing case.

Still, having 26 episodes of classic Pokemon for a little over a dollar an episode is a great deal, and one that shouldn't be missed by any Pokemon fan. If you're looking for classic episodes and little else, give this release a pick up.
