Portofino Bay Hotel; Orlando, Florida
By Mom2One onWe have stayed here before although we did not have a bad stay, we did not feel this hotel was for our family.
First I want to say check in was a breeze and was room was clean. The beds were comfortable. The bathroom was larger then most other hotel bathrooms.
The property of this hotel is just gorgeous. I enjoyed just waking peaceful walks around the grounds in the evenings. Like the other Universal hotels, your room key is also an unlimited express pass at Universal. I can not stress enough what a great perk this is.
At this hotel there are water taxis to take you back and forth to the parks. They seemed to run every 10 minutes or so. I never had any problems with waiting too long or overcrowding on the boat.
I enjoyed the Italian theme of the hotel, even the workers greet you in Italian, that is a great little touch.
The pools were very nice, we spent most of our time at the zero entry pool. My son enjoyed the slide. The pool is set in a beautiful beach like setting, very nice.
One evening while out exploring the grounds we came upon an Italian Opera singer on a balcony. We stayed and listened to him for a while. He was very good. I am not sure if he is out all the time, but if you can try to check him out.
This hotel has many restaurants to choose from, but I hope you like Italian. Most of the time we ate at Sal's, which has very delicious pizzas. We did check out Mama Della's, I had the fettuccine alfredo. I thought it was very good, better then I can make at home.
Now although I really do not have any complaints about this hotel, I would prefer if I am traveling with family to stay at the Hard Rock Hotel. That has a more family atmosphere.
I kind of felt a little out of place at Portofino Bay, it seemed more for adult travelers or honeymooners.
I told my husband that I would love to go back to Portofino Bay just as a couple. This hotel is a great romantic hotel.

I like the sounds of this hotel, does sound like a nice quiet getaway.
Sounds like another great spot for hubby and me ;)
Funny how some places can be wonderful but not have quite the right atmosphere for what you need at the time!
We have thought about staying at this hotel when we are in Orlando for Universal visits and not our usual Disney visits but justifying the price has always been an issue. Thanks you for the insiders look at the property.
I agree with what you said. It seems like that would be a terrific place to go on a nice romantic vacation. I don't know how well kids would like it though. Thanks for the detailed information on this hotel!
I'll keep this one in mind if I ever go to Disney alone with my husband. It sounds like an excellent option! Thanks for the information.
I've looked at this hotel for this coming fall when we take our next disney trip (and plan to...gasp...go to Universal too)! Since we have kids though, I think I'll have to research this one a little more. I do like the fact that it lets you have the unlimited express pass though.
It sounds like overall the Portofino Bay Hotel had a great atmosphere and lots of great perks, but just not really the right mood for that particular trip. I was really put off by my last trip to Universal, but I doubt I will stay away forever! ;) Thanks for the tips!
Hmm..this does sound like a nice, romantic hotel...might have to try it out next time we are down that way.
