When my son was potty training he decided to go the route of just using a potty seat. We felt it would get him used to using the regular toilet at the same time.
We let my son help with deciding which one and he wanted the Blue's Clues Soft Potty Seat. This ended up working great. We made a place where we would hang it up in the bathroom and when it was time for my son to go, he would just grab it down and up it on the toilet.
I like it because it made him feel like a big kid since he was using the big toilet and there was no worry that he was going to fall in. He felt safe and comfortable when using it.
Now I don't know if this was because of the seat or I was just lucky, but potty training was really hassle-free and it went very smoothly for every one.
I like the potty seat because it was easy to clean! Now we did buy this many years ago but I just looked on line and saw it was still available.
I would definitely recommend going this route when starting potty training.
