I am sure each and every one of you have heard the old saying regarding our children," they do not come with instructions"and I am no different. About 18 months ago I got a call into my sons school because they wanted to give him some test. Immediately I jumped to the worst possible conclusion, and it was an agonizing wait for the dreaded assesment results. Finally after two weeks I was called in for these results and you could have blown me over with a whisper, the school was testing my son because he is gifted,(didn't see that one coming) but he was having trouble staying focused. I always knew he was very clever and that he was an early reader and he shares my love of the book, but the school felt it was more than that. We were sent off to the Childrens Hospital for more test and then to the Behavioral Clinic for even more testing. -please insert nervous mum here-Finally the pschologist told me my son had a form of autism called aspergers syndrome. Well I didn't hear the end of the sentence because the word "autism" continued to reverbrate in my head.I am a firm believer that monsters only exist in the dark, so I set out to find out as much as I could about this condition. In my search the name Tony Attwood always came up first. I purchased this book and read it through, and now it is my bible. This book explains what this is,basically a form of high functioning autism, what to expect, how to handle numerous situations, and most important it enlightened me to the fact that "Aspie Kids" are very clever kids and need to be celebrated. There are a few social issues that we have learned to live with, but if we were all alike, what a boring place. I encourage anyone who has had this diagonisis to start with this book, you to will find it a bible & give your kid a hug :)

I totally agree with you that trying to make everyone "normal" would make a very boring world. Of course, this comment comes from someone who is off the end of several charts.... hahahaha

My neighbor is also an Aspergers Miracle Wonder Woman as we have always called her, she remembers dates and things that happened on those exact dates, she is a genious with numbers and I believe anyone with Aspergers should be encouraged to use their genious, they are the ones who will come up with a cure for cancer or invent the most useful thing mankind has ever known!
