If you want a good deal on a 2008 Prius - in any color - you should wait until the big lot sales next year. The line is being redesigned, and dealers will be eager to get these babies (whichever ones are remaining) out of the way.

The Prius wasn't the first mainstream hybrid car, but it quickly became the most popular. It's sleek design, even back in 2000, made drivers take notice. The redesign in 2004 gave an incredible boost to the car's reputation.

Previously EPA ratings put this car's fuel efficiency in the 60's. Those standards have since been revised, and now it's in the 40s and 50s. This reflects the lower numbers most owners are getting today. It should also be noted that the Prius has much lower emissions than cars with gas or diesel engines.

As a larger compact, I've found the back seat to be more spacious than the Toyota Camry's. It's more convenient for fitting three car seats.

On the road, the base models may have some problems with stability, but this is not noticed in the Touring versions, and -in fact- there is a device called the BT Stiffening plate you can put on a base model that fixes the problem. This is the only performance problem I've noticed.

Differences in the Prius than in traditional cars: Oval vs. Round steering wheel, extremely convenient once you get used to it, A push button to start, and many come with upscale features like back-up camera, navigation system, etc.

Given the rising cost of gas, and the long-standing reputation of Toyota, I would recommend a Prius to anyone with up to 5 people to cart around. However, if you are looking merely for a commuter car for saving gas, skip the hybrids and look toward electric.
