People say that Linux software's are hard to understand, too complex and definitely not for the children, but that will soon change because now comes Tux Paint! Tux Paint is a neat little program made by Bill Kendrick and his team. It is an open source project so it's free. It also works on Windows and Macs. According to the ReadMe, Tux Paint is just a simple drawing program for kids but he forgot to mention that it's so much fun! Tux Paint's target users are children 3 and older. So my cousins and I love it! We used it all day long.
Interface
Tux Paint has a clean and simple interface with no menus and all those "confuse-bars". Tools, like pen, stamp, save and exit are on the left while brushes are on the right. The colors, pre-defined and unchangeable are on the bottom. Using the program is so effortless and fun maybe because Tux, the little Linux mascot is around guiding you and giving advices at the bottom. Tux Paint also has cute sounds that make me want to be a child once more.
The Tools
Tux Paint may be simple but its tools are not. Where can you find a squirrel brush style or a starfish pen? There is the stamp tool for stamping cute Tux in your kid masterpiece. There are lines, shapes and text tools for the basics but the one called the magic tool caught my eye. The magic tool is a set of special effect tools that can create grass, bricks, sparkles and rainbows. It can also lighten, darken, smudge, cartoonize and flip. It can even turn your drawing into a negative, give it a dripped effect and change the tint. Of course, there is always the undo tool to cancel your "painting errors". You can save your drawings but can't name them. They are just there like slides. When you try to open, you are just given thumbnails of your works. It think this method simplify matters for children. No need to type in "My Best Masterpiece" only to find out there's already one.
Why I Love It?
Well, simple. It is a really straightforward program and cleverly made to suit the needs of the children. People will not even need to guide their kids because all is self explanatory. Parents can leave their kids to wander and discover their potential talents. Who knows, maybe your kid will be the next Da Vinci!
