“Be Like Me - Read A Good Book!”
In 1999, Denny’s Restaurants sold a promotional stuffed toy of Wishbone. The plush dogs are about seven inches from head to tail. They were made in China, and authorized by Big Feats Entertainment. You could get them with a meal for $3.49. Best of all, if you press a certain spot in his chest Wishbone will talk to you. Mine says “Be like me, read a good book!” But I think that there were several choices of phrases that the dogs said. I tried to research this on line, but couldn’t verify this. However, at the time, I also bought one for a gift, and I’m pretty sure that it said something different.
My pictures don’t show it, but his left ear has the paw-print spots that were Wishbone’s trademark. The plastic collar has “Wishbone” stamped on it. I have no idea what to put in some of the required rating categories for something like this.
As a collectible for value, I see that there is one of these dogs on eBay at the present time starting at a bid of $6.50. Mine is not for sale. He sits on my computer as part of a small collection of very special stuffed dogs.
I’ve always thought that Wishbone was one of the most creative educational programs ever devised. Some stations still carry the re-runs even though no new shows were taped after (I think) 2003.
It never fails to bring a smile to my face when I press Wishbone’s chest and hear him advise me to go read a book.
