When my mother rented this movie, she told me that it was strange, but funny and that I would probably like it. I really didn't pay much attention to that for some reason. When I finally did watch it, I enjoyed it and found it just as mom said, strange but quite funny.
The plot of the movie is that this average Joe (literally, his name is Joe and he's completely average) works in the military. The military has come up with an idea to extend the lives of their best pilots to keep them in their prime physical condition longer by putting them in a deep sleep that prevents aging. This is in the experimental stages and is TOP secret, so only a small few know about it. Since it is in the experimental stages, they need a guinea pig to test this on, so naturally they go to Joe, the perfectly average guy with no family that nobody would miss. They also pick up a woman who is an....uh.... well, someone else nobody would really miss. They put them in a coffin like box and put them to sleep. Then the head of this operation is arrested on a scandal, so all knowledge of the project is lost and the lab destroyed. Somehow nobody even thinks o open the big boxes big enough to contain a human, but that's beside the point. They wake up again 500 years in the future where the earth is not some utopia of bunches of shiny things and astounding technology, nor is it completely destroyed by some natural disaster or war. It is a world, where the stupid people have out bred the smart people for centuries and there isn't a single person of high or even average intelligence left. The movie explains this process in a way that had my thinking, " My gosh.... That..... That actually makes sense!" Now Joe has to find a way back to his time while living in a society in which one of the toughest questions on their intelligence tests is ," If you have one bucket with five gallons of water in it, and another bucket with two gallons in it, how many buckets do you have?"
This movie is a funny sort of commentary on the deterioration of modern societies and it actually sort of leaves you thinking if this is the direction humanity is headed in. It's unfortunate that this movie was just shoved out there with a limited release pushing it into relative obscurity. This is a good, truly funny movie that deserves more than that. I suggest that you go rent this movie and see for yourself how good it is.
