Richmond Metro Zoo By kimmtd on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
The Richmond Metro Zoo, located in Amelia County about 30 minutes outside of Richmond, is a nice little zoo! I have been to 2 major zoos in the USA, one of which is the Washington DC Zoo where I used to visit a lot when I went to school near it. I am used to a large zoo, and wasn't sure what to expect at the Richmond Metro Zoo. Honestly, I had heard some negative things about it in the past, so when I went with my daughter's class on their field trip, I was hesitant. But, as I walked around, I saw a nice facility with wonderful animals. I have heard that there has been a lot of improvements done over the past few years, if that is true, I would saw it was worth it.
We spent about 2 ½ hours with my daughter's class, then we stayed longer on our own to go back through and see it all. My daughter's favorite animal is a flamingo, so she was thrilled to see them there. There was a bird habitat where you enter a large bird cage with several types. They have benches to sit and enjoy the birds around you. There was a nice assortment of animals, no elephant to my son's dismay, but they did have a Rhino. But, the best, most fun thing every> you can pet & feed the giraffes! Yes! Did you know giraffes have long, and I mean long!, purple tongues? You can buy a cup of food at the zoo entrance, or just use the quarter machines near the giraffes. I think we spent an hour just enjoying ourselves with the giraffes. I mean, how cool! That alone made the trip worth it! We are taking everyone we know out there to let them experience it, it makes the trip extra special!!!
