Sabatier Laguiole 6 Piece Steak Knife By Candida Eittreim on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

I went hunting for new steak knives after my older ones finally began showing cracking on the handles, and sharpening didn't help the blades anymore. Well, they were 18 years old, so I couldn't complain. :)

I found this Sabatier set at Amazon, in my Gold Box offerings, and at $14.99 (Gold Box price), I just couldn't pass them up.

The Sabatier knives I grew up with were superior to anything around at that time, and I knew they were extremely durable. But would these steak knives perform as well?

When they were delivered, I was pleased with the beauty of their appearance. The rosewood handles had a nice polished look and felt extremely well balanced in my hand. The blades were razor sharp. Placed in their slots, in their especially designed rosewood box, they looked lovely.

These are not knives to place in the dishwasher. The rosewood handles will dry and crack under the high heat. After handwashing them, dry them, and every so often, rub the handles with a bit of lemon oil. Do this with the rosewood holder too, and they should maintain their good looks for a very long time.

While these are not top of the line Sabatier, and Amazon makes this clear, they are worth having. For ordinary use they are wonderful for anyone not needing high end steak knives. We have used these knives almost daily, for over a year, and they are as sharp as the day I bought them.

They are light, and very little pressure is needed to cut through meats at the table. Which makes them ideal for anyone having stiff aching hands. They clean up very easily, and I've yet to notice any darkening or spotting on their blades. An indication of the quality of the metal used for the blades.

If you are looking for a good basic set of steak knives, that are extremely attractive, and cut your meats well time after time, I highly recommend giving these a try.

Good point about not putting them in the dishwasher. If you want to maintain a sharp blade, even dishwasher safe knives with plastic handles should never be put in the dishwasher. The dishwasher is not a knives friend, years of knife lessons working at Bed, Bath and Beyond thought me that.
