Scanner Radio For Car Races By jb_shops on - Updated Sep 18, 2011
Hey Race Fans! If you have ever been to a auto race or are considering attending you must take three things along: a scanner, noise reducing headphones, and sunscreen -- although many would argue that a cold beverage in a 12oz can is more important than all three. A scanner allows you to hear the conversations between a driver and his team, race officials, and audio from the radio & television broadcasts. This is totally changes the experience.
The Radio Shack Pro-74 scanner is a basic manually programmable scanner. There a couple of bells & whistles but not as fancy as many of the others that are on the market. With 100 channels, it has enough capacity to store the primary numbers for all of the race teams, the radio & TV broadcast feeds, race officials channels, and many of the secondary channels each team uses.
Pros: has enough capacity, allows user to program a car number (you hear conversation on a channel and the screen shows the number of the car talking), it also has priority channels.
Cons: Manually programmable with small buttons (get ready for 20-30 mins of prep time) and heavy.
The scanner also receives UHF/VHF/Air/800 MHz. So you can program it to listen to the police & fire, use it to listen to an emergency weather channel, or what it was designed for .... attending car races.

Who knew that you could do this at the track as well as on TV? Not a race fan, but this might make it more fun.
Huge NASCAR fan. Boy the idea of being able to listen to Tony is interesting. As you can tell I am a big Tony Stewart fan. Gotta love the bad boys! Thanks for the great information.
Oh boy, my NASCAR-fan husband's birthday is this week... what a great gift idea. It sounds like it would be really fun for him to have while working around the house. Thanks for sharing your experience with this product!
I never realized you could listen to conversations between driver and pit crew, what a neat thing! That sure would make the races a bit more interesting.
