Scientific Atlantic Modem Is A Average Product By BillF on - Updated Sep 18, 2011

I talked to my cable TV repairmen recently, whom claimed this modem is on its last legs. It is about 3 years old. He claimed they are making modems cheaper and with less longevity than years ago and my modem life is about average, I rated it slightly higher than average reliability since it hads not failed yet. The speed is nothing to right home to mother about. It has done a serviceable job on light usage since our cable company instaled it with the internet connection in May 2006. It is a Atalantic scientific 2100 series. The repairmen could not necessarily suggest any choice better or worse when it fails completely in the next year. So my choice will be to either have my cable company replace for ~ $3 a month or just buy whatever is cheapest at my local electronic store when it fails. It would be nice if their was a truly supperior in reliability modem out their so I did not have to go through this hassle every 3-4 years. In short, Scientific Atlantic Modem ia average product in a mediocre modem marketplace.

I have the same modem, had it also for about 3 years..They don't make this model anymore. Its coped well though the hammer I've given it, I'm a heavy user when it comes to downloads, thats the reason why I dont buy a modem and I just rent them. It's time though to take it back to comcast and swap it with a newer model, something more up to date..what they are gonna give me though I'm not sure.

I enjoyed your review Bill. I have been having modem problems too. My cable company recently talked me into upgrading. Then my internet speed slowed way down. Turns out my modem, 4 years old couldn't handle the action. I ended up going back down to my original speed til I move and upgrade. And feeling like a fool.

We never run into speed issues with Verizon. You should consider switching just for the convenience!

Yep, modem is pretty much outdated nowadays; it's ridiculously slow and costs way too much considering what you're getting. I'd like to get FiOS, but it isn't offered in my area...
