Seagate Momentus 5400 Working Fine So Far By Dave on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

I had to replace the hard drive in my laptop, so I selected a Seagate! Seagate, from California, is one of the defacto oldschool brands, but I was happy to find they make notebook hard drives as well.

I found that this was a performance boost over my old drive (and as it is 120GB, it's also four times larger), and I was happy with my purchase partially based on name brand. It's all made overseas, but you just can't find an American-made hard drive anymore.

However, while the Seagate Momentus line of hard drives has impressed me so far, there have been two drawbacks.

First, the drive is noisier than my old one. With this one you can hear a slight whirr when it gets going. However, this noise stops after a few minutes of use.

I also found that the drive works faster, but has a slower startup time with WindowsXP. I haven't done anything differently to my computer except put in a fresh hard drive, but it takes a few clicks for it to activate and load up XP. Go figure, considering this has a faster read/write cycle than my old one.

What I found was the Seagate Momentus is fairly priced and it seems to work well. I expect four years of service from it -- we shall see how that works out.

I've replaced my desktop hard drive twice with Seagates, mainly because my machine came with the Seagate installed. I also tried Maxtor and hated it. Noisy and very kludgy compared to the other. Seagate sems to produce high quality, bug free drives. And they are very well priced. Mines been running 4 years without a hitch. Not bad for $80.00.

I noticed this has only 5400 RPM's which accounts for your start up issues. Most drives function better on the standard 7200 RPM's or the even better 10,000 RPM's models.

uh...Froggy said it. I am on my 5th hardrive on this 2002 model and have 5400 rpms . I had a 10,000 before, but it was used and didn't last long.It still connected up to my system in a flash versus this beast I have now. I got this one new for $50 because my buddy didnt like it and wanted a better one. I am goig to renew this one soon. I think i will look into this brand and search for the 10,000 rpm model froggy speaks of. iexpect to spend in excess of $100 for one thats worth the trouble, because replacing these is getting old. I am soon to get a new computer all together, but will want this old beast to last forever or until I am dead..
