Secular Christmas Songs - Nicely Done
By Joan Young onIts not that I mind modern interpretations of Christmas songs, but I like to hear the old classics too, and its sometimes hard to find collections like that. This year the US Postal Service has put together such a music collection, and its reasonably priced.
This CD is on sale at counters at the Post Office! Its an exclusive offer called Letters to Santa, a fitting theme for the post office. This is a completely secular album, making it a safe gift for anyone who celebrates Christmas, whether they are Christian or not.
The tracks are:
1. Let it Snow - Michael Buble - vocal solo
2. The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole - vocal solo
3. Sleigh Ride - Diana Krall - vocal solo
4. The Christmas Waltz - Frank Sinatra - vocal solo
5. Merry Christmas Darling - Natalie Cole (previously unreleased)
6. Christmas Time is Here - Vince Guaraldi - children singing (from A Charlie Brown Christmas)
7. Just Like Me - Vanessa Williams -vocal solo
8. Santa Claus is Coming to Town - Ray Charles - vocal solo
9. White Christmas - Rosemary Clooney - vocal solo
10. O Tannenbaum - Boney James - saxophone solo
11. Delivering Christmas - The Muppets - muppet chorus (from Letters to Santa)
12. Its the Most Wonderful Time of the Year - Cincinnati Pops Orchestra - chorus and orchestra
13. Ill Be Home for Christmas - Monica Mancini and Dave Koz - vocal solo and saxophone (previously unreleased)
The songs are not sung in a boring way, but neither are they embellished so much that you cant recognize the original piece. It makes nice background music in a somewhat mellow mood, or simply for listening since you can understand the words.
Total playing time is 45 minutes. I think that for $9.99 this is a good collection of music sung by familiar artists.
