Sentry Safe Security Chest By Jessica Ne on - Updated Sep 18, 2011
I have had this safe for years! It is ok for keeping small documents in but I would not recommend it for really keeping items safe. And, yes, that is the point of it.
This safe is very small inside. It could only hold a few papers, jewelry, coins, CDs, or any other small things you may need hidden. The outside has a handle so it is pretty easy to carry but it is not light at all. It is around 18 pounds. The lock is horrible! Part of the handle flips down to keep the safe closed and then it has a plastic key. Yes, PLASTIC! It would be very easy to break into this safe.
The main reason I keep this safe is in case of a fire. That is the point the Sentry company promotes. This safe offers 1/2 hour fire protection up to 1550 degrees. That is better than nothing. However, I did have a family member whose house burnt down and this safe did not protect their valuables.
Personally I would not buy this safe again. I would probably go with another one from the same company though. They have came a long way since this one was on the market.

Thanks for the info, still beats a safety deposit box!
wow a plastic key? I think I will pass this one up
this looks like a nice safe! i will look into it!
jessica, did you try contacting Sentry to see if the plastic key could be replaced with a metal one? I personally would be afraid to store anything really valuable in a safe with a plastic key. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with this.
Hey this is neat. I like how its got some fire proof to it.
These are great, we have two small ones. One for medivations and one for important papers(marriage certificate, birth certificates, etc).
How horrible that your relatives had the same safe to protect items from a fire and when a fire occurred the safe did not last! Is there any type of warranty on the safe if it does not withstand the heat of a fire?
I'm truly surprised that they included a plastic key-hopefully, now they have metal keys!
A plastic key??? These only worry me because someone could easily just take it with them if you were robbed. Although I have something similiar and like you we use it for fire safety for important papers. Hopefully we never have to find out how that part really works!
