Reviewing: Wally Lamb She's Come Undone

The book She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb is an "Oprah" book. I don't pick my reading just because Oprah likes it but since I got this book free through a friend I decided toread it. After reading this book I had mixed feelings about it. This story, about a girl coming-of-age, does grab your attention. And the fact that it can do that with a rather ordinary story (daddy's girl suffers through divorce and then daddy leaves and girl drowns her sorrows in food) is an accomplishment in itself. But it does grab your attention and holds it too. It makes you want to read on. I literally couldn't put it down.

This is a fairly negative story; cynical and stereotypical at times, the girl gets very fat and is therefore rejected by everyone...you know...because "fat" people are to be loathed. Never mind the fact that she is a brat and brings much of her misfortune on herself. . She then proceeds to embark on a self-destructive path involving, you guessed it...more food, and sex and stupid decisions. Because, of course, what else could she do? Fat people do stupid things right? That is what I mean by cynical and stereotypical but still, I couldn't put it down. Check your local library for it and give it a read. It's not the worst book I've ever read. I'd like to know what you think of it.
