Sony DRX840U External DVD Recorder
By Amy Nil onWe burn a lot of DVDs.We are huge music fans, and are now creating family DVDs on a regular basis. We have both a Mac and a PC.The Mac doesn't have a DVD burner (I did not know this when I purchased my MacBook - how Apple gets away with charging almost $1000 for a laptop that doesn't have a DVD burner is a whole other story....), and the DVD burner on my Dell died after burning hundreds of DVDs and CDs.
Because we wanted something for both computers, we decided on an external DVD burner. We also needed something that was Mac and PC compatible.I wanted a Plextor (the Rolls Royce of CD/DVD burners), but the newest model was just too expensive at the time.Over a year ago, we purchased the Sony external drive for about $125; currently, it can be found for around $80-$90.
This burner consistently burns good discs, and uses a USB port to connect to the computers. It is very easy to switch between the PC and the Mac.I should note that have the full Nero package, so I didn't touch the software that was included.
Overall, this burner was easy to use out of the box.We haven't had any issues, and use it a lot.I would recommend this burner without hesitation.

Well thanks, I have been thinking of getting one, so I can finally get all my pictures off my computer and get them saved for future use later. This sounds like a rgeat product. I will have to check at Best Buy, I think that is the latest new store that has arrived.
Sorry you didn't realize that the MacBook comes with the combo drive and not the super drive. The MacBook is kind of the lower-end Mac, with the MacBook Pro being the one that has the DVD burner. I'm glad you haven't had compatibility issues: those really are a thing of the past since the introduction of Mac OS X.
I'm so surprised your computer didn't come with a burner either!!! What you did get sounds fabulous though!
Sounds like a pretty good unit. Thanks for the info
This sounds like a good burner. My husband and I also burn a lot of DVDs in our business, this sounds like it would be a good backup unit.
I will have to keep an eye out for this. I want a dvd recorder!
