Swingaway Cargo Carrier Best Design By jb_shops on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
Generally when you think of Cargo carriers you think of a box or bag on the top of a SUV or minivan. These top type carriers add a lot of drag (read hurts gas mileage). Plus these top carriers are a pain to access. If grandmother's home is very far away, then your going to be more frustrated.
Thankfully, I found a different solution. A large box that kind of looks like an old steamer trunk that mounts on my receiver hitch. The best feature is that the box swings away allowing full access to the back lift-gate, window, or heaven forbid spare tire.
The box comes in black or white; both look good on the back of your vehicle. For safety there are brake lights built into the unit (connecting via trailer wiring socket) and a license place holder.
The max package includes several useful accessories that greatly improved my product satisfaction. 1) steel wheels allow easy storage 2) anti-wobble hitch coupling tightener so it was quiet 3) locking hitch pin
I used this on a 2500 mile vacation last year and was amazed at easy it was to access my cargo, securely lock the box, and keep everything weather-tight. We went through the hardest rainstorm I have ever driven through and no leaks!!!
At $3.50/gal gas why would consider a top mount box that would hurt your mileage--use a hitch mount box like this great one!
I added one photo, more to come.
Stowaway Super Max Swingaway Purchased at: Stowaway2.com Price: 699.00

I have seen these and wondered how stable they were. Pretty hefty price, but these days that's not so many tanks full of gas. Thanks for the info!
What a simply wonderful concept and product! This just makes so much sense jb. I love the total accessibility to your belongings, the fact it fits securely behind you, and that it is easy to handle. All this makes it well worth the $699.00 price tag.
Great idea, especially with gas mileage the way it is. We just went up to $3.55 today! Thanks for the great info.
I SO want one of these! I love that it swings open! Wonder if i can talk the husband into it?
This sounds great for road trips - you're too right about the bad gas mileage with the top mount containers. These gas prices are killer!!
I never thought either about the kind of mount that you have effecting your gas mileage-I just learned something tonight!!
Wow, what a great option! I had no idea these existed. With gas up the way it is, this is definitely the way to go!
This sounds like a great alternative to the roof carriers. Thanks for the great information.
I've seen these on people's SUVs going to the coast. They sure look like they hold a lot of goodies and gear. The gas mileage is a big concern these days. What a great option for travellers.
I think these would be perfect for a long road trip.
