The Giving Tree By uaezarb on - Updated Sep 18, 2011
This is one of my favorite childrens books. Shel Silverstein has many other great books, but this is one of the best. I love the lesson it can teach children about friendship, giving, and love. The story is about a boy and a tree that takes him from a boy to an old man. The boy takes advantage of the tree all through his life, but the tree is always there for him. I love the simple but effective illustrations in the book. It is somewhat of a sad story, but I still enjoy reading the book over and over and my grandchildren love it too. I think probably everyone gets a little different idea of what the story represents in real life, but that is another thing that makes it great. It makes a great story for discussing feelings. It should definately be on your bookshelf.

I've forgotten all about Shel Silverstein, one of my favorite authors when I was little! Where the Sidewalk Ends was my favorite book. This one seems great! I'll have to add it to the collection I've started for when my little one arrives in June. Thanks!
I love this book too! I agree that it can be interpreted many different ways.
I bought this for my little boy and will give it to him when he becomes a man. I love the lesson, too!
I'll have to look out for this one. THanks.
This is one of my favorites too. I need to get it for my kids.
