The Joy Of Flymo By milletappe on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
Bit by bit we are trying to make little changes in our lives to go easier on the planet. Last year we brought it into the garden, picking up the endearingly named Flymo reel mower from Lee Valley.
We were expecting this to be a big sacrifice, entailing much more elbow grease and sweat. Not so. This European mower seems to glide over the lawn. It is almost surprising to see the steady stream of cuttings flying out behind it. In fact, the action of this mower is so pleasing, we actually wrangle a bit over who will do that particular chore.
The "Silent" aspect of this mower's operation is definitely part of the overall pleasurable experience as well. Apparently the blades are just a smidgen farther from the cutting bar than in the noisier reel mowers you may recall, eliminating the characteristic sound many of us would associate with these mowers.
These aren't really negatives necessarily, but I'll note them for posterity: we did have to reassemble the handle at one point as one of the screws loosened and fell out (could have been our own sloppy job first time round), and I regret not getting the optional Grass Catcher. I'll be rectifying that oversight this summer, for sure.

Good for you! Anything we can buy to help conserve energy and save our earth is valuable. I love the quiet sound of these when mowing lawns. I swear my next one will be one of these.
My father has been using his "old fashioned" mower for years... way before it became fashionable. He has a rather large lawn but found it to be much easier to maneuver and that it cut nicely as long as the blades are kept sharp. I will admit that I used to laugh at him... not any more... ;-)
It's nice to know Flymo now makes a silent version of their excellent mower
Ooooo. That's JUST what I need! Wonder where I can get one!
You are so right-this is so good for saving our planet!
I have such fond memories of being considered old enough to push the family's reel mower when I was a child. There is something very satisfying about know the that the grass is flying because of your own work.
