The Secret Life Of Bees
By exene onThe Secrete Life of Bees is based on a novel with the same name that I havent read yet but after watching this movie Im putting it on my list. The movie stars a familiar cast, Dakota Fanning, Alicia Keys, Queen Latifa and Jennifer Hudson. Dakota Fanning plays Lily Owens, a 14-year-old girl who accidentally shot her mom when she was four. Lily along with Rosalene (Jennifer Hudson) run away to find out more about Lilys mother. They come across a house own by three black sisters June(Alicia Keys) May (Sophie Okenedo) and August Boatwright(Queen Latifa). Lilly believes that her mother had spent time in the house. While Lily is there she helps with the familys bee farming and honey business. I would classify this movie as a coming-of-age drama.
The transition of scenes and situations could have been better and I kept thinking to myself maybe its better in the book. Rosalene characters was suppose to try to transform herself into a more refined and articulate person but not enough of that was shown in the movie and by the end its like she did a complete 180 with little transition. I wish there was more of Mays character, I felt there wasnt enough for her and felt less compassionate about her death. I really liked June because she presented strong feminist values advance for her time. This movie was OK at best for me but it did get me interested in the book hoping in goes deeper in character development then this movie did.
