By Ally onI wanted to read "The Secret Life Of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd before going to see the film that was made from the book.I was pulled in right from the start.Poor Lilly Owens is stuck living with her alcoholic, abusive neglectful father, T-Ray,since her mother had passed.All her days are spent working for him selling peaches and knealing in grits if she dare try to read a book.The only love she recieves is from the house keeper, Rosaleen.
This story takes place in South Carolina durring the civil rights movement.When she acompanies Rosaleen, who for the first time as an African American woman will be allowed to register to vote, all sorts of mayhem gets stirred up.While standing up to some thugs from the kkk Rosaleen gets herself thrown in jail, and poor Lilly gets herself scarred knees from a long knight of kneeling in grits.
Well, Lilly decides it's time.Time for her freedaom, and time for Rosaleens'.She will head to Tibouron South Carolina.A place she believes her mother was able to be happy before ending up with that terrible T-Ray.Soon their path is swirling with love and bees and honey and family...But what will happen to Lilly?Will she get pulled from her knew life?Will Rosaleen get caught and thrown back in jail?You'll just have to read to find out!
