The True Confessions Of Bananarama By nightwing on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

True Confessions, is a good albeit odd album by Bananarama. It has what is probably their most well known song, Venus, and a bunch of other songs that sound nothing like it. For all the fun and joy that comes from Venus, the rest of these songs are quite serious in tone.

This is a decidedly mature batch of songs here. None more so than the excellent Trick of the Night. This song is absolutely beautiful and has a bit of jazz quality to it as the saxophone plays in the background. It is one of my favorites by the band and I would love to see them a do an entire album of similar songs. Dance with a Stranger has a really sexy sound to it. Do not Disturb is a fun song with a nice mellow beat to it.

More than Physical was remixed into a fast-paced dance song when it was released as a single, so to hear the slow version on this album is a little jarring. I think the song and it's lyrics fit more with a dance song. I used to love the dance version when I played in clubs "back in the day."

While this is a good album, I feel that the great song Venus just doesn't fit here. It's one of their best songs that I still enjoy to this day, but it just doesn't fit with the rest of the album. Regardless, I do enjoy the album and it is nice to hear the band trying new sounds.
