The Venture Bros Season 1
By Syllabub onThe Venture Bros Season One dvd set is a worthy presentation of the first 13 episodes of an original and intelligent television show.
The show itself is superficially a send up Johnny Quest and similar whiz-bang cartoon shows. However, this animated dark comedy for adults quickly reveals itself to be so much more, drawing most of its humor from a wide range of cultural references.I don't know if anyone could catch all of the show's jokes the first time around, but the attention to detail and hilariously unlikeable characters make it a pleasure to rewatch.
The first season comes on two dvds packaged in an artwork covered fold-out housed in a black slipcase featuring the show's familiar skull graphic. The high quality, dramatic artwork of the characters posed heroicly suits the ironic tone of the show perfectly.
The dvds themselves contain a nice selection of extra features in addition to the show itself, including genuinely enjoyable creator commentary on select episodes, deleted scenes (unusual for an animated show), and a very funny sneak peak at the never-to-be-made live action movie. The only flaws are a few minor picture faults (jagged edges on outlines) that are almost inevitable when transferring tv animation to dvd, and that the commentaries are so good that I was left wanting more!
Highly recommended to any fans of the show, or, given its reasonable price for a full television season, a worthwhile gamble for anyone unfamiliar with this brilliant comedy.Go Team Venture!
