The Wii, over hyped or deserving of the praise?
By YodaGoneMad onI was lucky enough to find a Nintendo Wii on launch day, i picked one up, and rushed home to play Zelda. But then a week later i finished Zelda, and tired of Wii sports, and my Wii sat unused for months on end. This is basically how it has gone the entire time i have owned the Wii. Every once in a while there is 1 really great game, but once you are through that you put it back down and don't touch it for another few months. Even today there are only a handful of quality titles, consisting of the normal Nintendo line-up of Zelda, Mario, and Metroid along with their various spin-offs and sports titles. While these games are good, there aren't really enough to justify the $250 price-tag of what is essentially a Gamecube with motion control. But enough about the games what about the motion control. It is not quite as good as you might be led to believe. It works, but it really only does certain things in response to certin motions, now this is fun in some cases, and at the very least a good break from the norm. But it actually hurts many games, and there were quite a few occasions i was wishing for a nice gamepad to play on. On the visual side the Wii is just a rebuilt Gamecube, so expect distinctly dated graphics, though some Nintendo titles do a good job making up for it with fantastic art design. Sound is stereo or Pro logic, no 5.1 support here. Online is the worst of the package, forcing you into a gimped barely functioning system, which requires 15 digit hexadecimal codes to be exchanged to play with friends, and supports almost no community or communication. Overall, the Wii is very much a casual gamers machine, but it is a bit overpriced for what it delivers, and i am sure owes a great deal of it's success to the massive amount of hype surrounding it. I recomend you try to play a Wii somewhere before investing in it, and take a good look at the game library to see if there is enough you want to play to justify the cost.
