Thrifty Basketball Works Fine:0 By donnabc on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

My son decided last year that he wanted to play basketball. Now, in my youth I was pretty athletic, but I have to confess, this is one sport I never played and really don't know all that much about.

But I signed him up and after the games started soon learned that he really needed his own ball and a net to practice with at home. Now bare in mind I have already gotten him new shoes that TIE so they stay on better (a good idea since he ran out of his others at the first practice), the "right" socks and shorts. So, I was not real excited about another purchase. He of course wanted the $30 ball he saw at a sports store. Well, I really did not see the need for that. Lucky for me, we found a perfectly good basketball at Dollar General for $5!

Now, my son is 8 so this might not work with an older boy who knows the brands. But, for us it was the perfect solution. The ball is now about 6 months old and looks the same. It bounces the same, and plays just fine.

Glad to hear you found a deal on the basketball and your son doesn't seem to know the difference. And I agree, after a few years you probably won't be able to pull the wool over his eyes anymore. :o) Dollar General has some great finds!

I think you got a great deal on the basketball. It should be fine for your son's age. Since the ball still looks the same and still bounces good, you made a wise choice.

I am totally amazed that you were able to find a basketball for $5! I had no idea that they could be had for so cheap! I agree, for just basic playing around there is no need to spend the big bucks on a ball.

Great deal! There is nothing wrong with getting something at a bargain lol. I'm sure that to him there is no difference. Later on you might not be so lucky lol.

I like the look of this ball & of course I am digging the price you paid for it!! I'm sure your son doesn't care about the brand or how much you paid-he's just happy he has a cool ball!!

What a bargin; $5 for a basketball. I don't see any difference in the picture either!

Yes, starter equipment really doesn't need to be the top of the line! His insistence on name-brand stuff will come soon enough!
