Try And Break My Ugly Stick By Scott Parizo on - Updated Sep 18, 2011
I recently purchased a Fishing Pole at my local Dicks Sporting Goods and I went with the Shakespeare Ugly Stick 6 feet in length. The pole came with a shakespeare reel which already had some fishing line on it. All I had to do was add some tackle on the line and I was ready to throw it in the water and catch the big one. The ugly stick seems to be very durable as it can bend very far meaning no matter what size fish lands on your line it should not break no guarantees obviously but what I fish for here in Lake Champlain I would be very suprised if i was to see this pole break. I have taken this pole out a few times already and have caught a couple sucker fish and bo pouts and a perch. the only complaints that I have is sometimes when I cast the line wraps around the real causing a little bit of a mess but I think it may be user error and not the acutal pole or real itself very good product.

No, I don't think it's just user error. We had two of these Ugly Sticks and had problems with line wrapping around the reel too many times to count. We finally limited ourselves to either anchoring these in holders or simply using them to drop fish.
My main fishing pole is an Ugly Stick and I think it's the best. About the line getting wrapped up in the reel, you have to be careful not to put too much line on the reel because of the way the spool is shaped. Try relining your rod with a little less line, don't fill it to the brim of the spool, maybe about half. See how that works.
