Where It Began: Madonna's First Cd By nightwing on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

It's funny to listen to this disc now. The songs seem so simple and Madonna's voice is so thin and untrained. Her work has changed a lot since this disc was released in the early eighties.

Even with it's somewhat dated sound, a fair amount of this disc still holds up pretty well today. It has some of Madonna's most famous songs like Lucky Star, Borderline, and Holiday. While good material like that is still enjoyable to listen to, some of the lesser material just doesn't hold up for me. Songs like Physical Attraction and I Know It sound so simple and even a bit boring.

One of my favorite songs here, which is probably lesser known, is Burning Up. It's a great song with a bit of harder edge. Madonna performed it live (and even played guitar) on her last concert tour turning it into more of a rock song. I'd love to see her or someone else redo this song more in that style.

In all, this is a good and fun disc. For me, it just pales in comparison to her later work which is far more enjoyable to me.
