Wilderness System Kayaks By donnabc on - Updated Oct 15, 2011
The first set of Kayaks I owned were hand me downs from my parents. Both were Wilderness System Kayaks (one yellow and one red). I LOVED these kayaks and would probably still have them if it weren't for Floyd and the flood of '99! I'm not sure if they were stolen off my property or carried away in the floodwaters. But when I made it out to our land after the floodwaters receded, they were gone!
But I digress, this is about the kayaks…and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a sturdy, well-made kayak. These boats were used for many years before they disappeared and never presented any problems. I can't even begin to tell you all the places I took them. But the most frequent would be Tar River, Pamlico Sound, and the waterways in and around Beaufort and Morehead City. It's great for exercise and very calming if you like nature.
The seats, while not plush, were comfortable. There was plenty of storage room both in the front and behind you. One word of caution though. I would not consider them heavy, but it was a bit of a chore for me to heave them up on my roof alone...there are lighter weight kayaks out there:0)
Wilderness System Kayaks Purchased at: dad and mom:0) Price: free, can't beat that!

Shucks, can I come kayak in your neck of the swamp? Thanks for the info.
We had these too and loved them. Great kayaks!
I do not know anything about Kayaks but this sounds like it works great for you. I love it that you got it at the store of Mom and Dad, I wish there was one of those near me.
I have never been on a kayak. This one was perfect especially because it was free :) I hope the guys helped you put it up on the rack if it was that heavy. I really want to try this one day. Maybe next vacation!
I'm not much of the adventurous type but these sound really interesting. Thanks for sharing!
This sounds like a quality kayak and what a wonderful gift your parents passed on. I appreciate the information and also the great story surrounding them.
Can't beat free, can you?! I think it makes it even more special because they were given to you from your parents! I have to admit-my fear of kayaking is that I will tip the darned thing over-maybe I'll get brave again one day & try it!
