Winter Solstice By Chefmom on - Updated Oct 15, 2011

I guess I've read every novel and short story written by British author Rosamunde Pilcher. She is absolutely my all-time favorite writer, and "Winter Solstice" is my favorite of the favorites. It's also her most recent book and according to Pilcher, unfortunately her last.

Pilcher takes the reader inside the lives of several characters in England and Scotland. She weaves their lives together effortlessly, telling several stories at the same time. In this book, her main character is Elfrida, an elderly lady who befriends a gentleman named Oscar and moves with him to Scotland.

I love the way Pilcher involves you in details -- the food, the way the homes are decorated, the shopping list. Her writing makes you want to pay a long visit to these characters. She is adept at family stories. Don't miss this great read!
