Max Brooks's World War Z, now available in trade paperback, is an extremely intelligent take on the absurd premise of the dead returning to life hungry for human flesh.Told as a series of interviews with a broad scope, the book explores a diversity of reaction, both personal and political, to the unfortunate occurance of shambling zombies walking the earth and feasting upon the still living who upon death join the grotesque numbers of ravenous animate corpses.

The human characters are well written with distinct voices, and, aside from the premise itself, the events are rendered quite believably. There is a nice mix of humor and horror, and while some may be put off by the more politically charged chapters, the book itself takes no single position and should be enjoyable to anyone entertained by the notiong of zombies destroying human civilization.
