Yahtzee!

Reviewing: Hasbro Games Yahtzee
Purchased at: Can't Remember     Price: $10.00 USD

Most of you are probably familiar with Yahtzee, at least to some extent. This dice game has been around long enough, since 1956, as far as I know, but it doesn't get old.

The set includes 5 dice, one red plastic cup where you shake the dice before rolling, scorecards, plastic bonus chips, and game rules. The game is easy: each player rolls dice trying to gather certain combinations: Full House, Large or Small Straight, and of course Five Of A Kind - which is called Yahtzee. Each combination gives the player a certain amount of points, and Yahtzee, the hardest one to roll, gives the most. Scorecards may seem a little confusing at first, but score-keeping is easy to figure out, and the cards are very helpful. Just make sure you make enough copies of them as the original pad that comes with the game will not last long.

What I like the most about Yahtzee is the combination of luck and strategy. While you cannot control how your dice roll, you can work with the results, thinking and planning your next moves. The game is fun for kids and adults alike, and it helps to improve basic math skills, too.

I do play this game for hours, because my oldest sister forces me to, at least twice a week -- and then gets all pouty if she loses, as if I won on purpose... OK, I'm going to stop now. let me just add that now there's also "Power Yahtzee," which takes at least twice as long, but man, can you rack up points! and of course Christmas dice, which have BIG pictures and tiny little numbers. Watching me and my two sisters squinting to find out if a candy cane was a 3 or a 5 would probably have been pretty funny...

Used to play it with my grandmother before they packaged it up in a box! Another classic game that is a real winner.

My mom bought this for me in 6th grade to help me with my math - can't say that it worked but I am hooked on this game even if I have to play alone.
