Today, collecting salt and pepper sets is a popular hobby. Shakers were made by many different companies and in many designs and themes. They were also made in different materials such as plastic, ceramic, metal and pottery.
I like the quality of pottery, so I've collected a few sets of salt and pepper shakers made by the Shawnee Pottery Company. Those in my collection include Chefs, Swiss Boy & Girl, Dutch Boy & Girl, Flower Pots, Milk Cans, Puss & Boots, Smiley & Winnie Pigs and Winking Owls. My favorite is the Puss & Boots cat, since I have the cookie jar and creamer to match.
The shakers are very well made and durable. They had cork stoppers in the bottom, however, over the years, many are missing. There were many different shakers made by Shawnee. Some of the most desirable ones were trimmed with gold.
The Shawnee Pottery Company started in 1937 in Zanesville, Ohio. The company produced kitchenware, dinnerware and art pottery. It was closed in 1961. Shawnee pottery is very collectible and desired by many.
These sets average $10-$35. Most of my shakers came from local estate sales, but they can also be found at antique malls, trade shows, flea markets, second hand shops and on-line. One of the easiest places to find these collectible shakers is E-Bay. Some sell for very reasonable prices, so anyone can become a collector. It's challenging and fun!

My sisiter-in-law would like these ,shes a collector
Oh my, the dutch boy/girl sets are familiar to me, my grandmother had these and she use to spend every Saturday morning dusting and cleaning them...I just use to play with them :) Thanks for the info, and the memory!
