Tonight, we had a telemarketer phone us trying to sell my husband a cheep long-distance plan. The one-sided conversation I heard went something like this,
"Well, can you beat our current plan of $3/mo. for 10,000 minutes?"
"No, not 1,000, 10,000...."
"No, no, we don't pay a monthy fee or a service charge. Just $3."
*silence*
"Ok, you have a nice night too!"
In a nutshell, Skype is cheep long distance.
Skype is an online service that allows you to make phone calls from one computer to another, or from your computer to a telephone over the internet. Of course, it works best on higher-speed internet, but I have used it before on dial-up, and it still worked well! Skype is so simple to use, reliable, and extremely affordable. When my husband and I first got engaged, I was living 2 provinces away, so we used Skype to keep in touch while I was at college--and even on a trip to Asia--for only a fraction of what it would have cost us.
Here's a peek at their current rates: (There's a special sale on till June 2008!)
Skype to Skype calls (calls from your computer to the computer of someone else who uses Skype) are free!
$2.95/mo. "Unlimited" (10,000 min/mo.) to anywhere in the US & Canada
$5.95/mo. "Unlimited" to Mexico
$9.95/mo. "Unlimited" International Calls.
A few things to know: You need a microphone or a headset, and it is not recommended that you use Skype to completely replace any phones you may have, because it is not capable of making 991 emergency calls.
Make cheap international calls with Skype
I have heard of this but didn't know exactly what it was, thanks for the great explanation!
Only $3 a month for that many minutes? Now that is awesome! Something I will have to look into since I have been looking for ways to cut expenses. Thanks!
No Problem. :) We really enjoy it. The main thing is to get yourself a headset that's comfortable. Also, I think Skype is now putting out "phones" that you can use with their service, but I haven't tried them, so I don't know how good they are. Still, it may be more comfortable/more portable than a headset.
I use Skype for chatting, I've never tried for phone purposes, maybe I'll try that. I'd love to cut out my $40/month phone bill!
