  • Camano Island State Park in the San Juan Islands

Camano Island State Park encompasses 134 acres of protected forest as well as 6,700 feet of saltwater beach frontage. It is located on Camano Island (one of the San Juan Islands) in Washington State, about 60 miles north of Seattle. It is a fun place to bring the family for the day or for an extended camping vacation.

    Picnicking at the Park
Camano Island state Park is a nice place for picnics. There are over 100 picnic spots with one large picnic shelter with a kitchen, sink and grill. The larger picnic shelter can be reserved ahead of time which is normally a good idea is you need one for a large group.

There are public restrooms and over 300 free parking spaces so it is easy to find a spot.

    Crabbing, Clamming & Fishing
There is seasonal crabbing, clamming & fishing on Camano Island State Park. Most people that are doing any fishing take their boats out, using one of the boat launches at the park. I don't recall anyone actually fishing at the park but I have clammed and crabbed there before, always with a number of others. There are both park rangers and game wardens patrolling the area so it is important to get a license beforehand.

    Hiking the Trails
This is the a great place to hike and catch amazing views of Mount Rainer and the Olympic Mountains as well as Puget Sound. It is not uncommon to catch a few eagles soaring by. The park has nearly 5 miles of self-guided nature trails and a 1.5 miles interpretive nature trail. They also have a 1-mile bike trail that you can hike on as well.

Camping on Camano Island State Park
The park has a nice first-come, first-served seasonal camping area. There are close to 90 standard campsites and one large group camping area for up to 200. There are spots for tents and facilities for trailers. There are four main bathroom/shower areas as well as three smaller bathrooms. One nice thing is that they observe quiet hours between 11pm and 6:30 am, which is nice for anyone camping with children.
