A mother is the truest friend we have - Washington IrvingCome May 9, many sons and daughters will celebrate the life of the mothers. It is mostly the time were we give more attention to the person who endured nine months and hours of labor just to bring us life.
It is amazing though that this holiday started as a club activity to help out mothers whose sons and daughters died in the civil war. The holiday became so popular that a lot of countries are also adapting it and make it one of their own holidays as well. Some countries even celebrate it on a different date to adapt another holiday that also commemorates motherhood.
Here in the Philippines, Mother's day is not really established as a national holiday but rather we commemorate the event by also practicing the gift giving and pampering of mothers during the celebration. Many greeting cards are in place, flowers, restaurants and spas are also expecting bigger sales during this day. It is like Valentine's day all over again.
Anna Jarvis may not be able to see the entirety of the impact of this holiday when she established this during 1908 but even a small gesture of appreciation from your sons, daughters or husband counts no matter if the gift was commercialized or not. For a mother, even one token regardless of whether or not the giver placed an effort to that token, the fact that it was given, it will really touch the deepest core of the heart.
We may not always agree with our mother, we may at times tend to neglect them due to having a busy life of our own but when tough times come, our mothers will be the first ones we can think of to help us with any ordeals in our life. The sons and daughters will always go back to the mother. The bond of the mother and the child can never be broken no matter how many times it will be tested.
For a woman, motherhood is one important role she must partake in order to be whole. Nothing compares to the joy of being able to love someone from the time they were born. When I gave birth to my child, the moment I saw her I felt something indescribable, it was like all the pains in my heart were lifted and the joy I felt reached cloud nine. It was the most wonderful feeling I ever had in my entire life.
To be a woman and a mother, I am very proud that I have fulfilled my essence in this world, like what Sushmita Sen said about the essence of a woman that won her the 1994 Miss Universe Title: "Just being a woman is God's gift. The origin of a child is a mother, a woman. She shows a man what sharing, caring, and loving is all about. That is the essence of a woman."
