This year my husband and I are taking our children into the wilderness for Summer vacation. We chose to travel to the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, to the Seneca Rocks and Smoke Hole Caverns area for a trip filled with fishing, hiking, and overall relaxation. We chose this location because we wanted a place away from the hustle and bustle of the cities, a place where we could hear ourselves think, and also a place where we could tune into each other and tune into mother nature.
During the school year our family's day are often spent in a rush of getting things done. My husband and I run kids back and forth to basketball practice, to school events, to friends' houses. We spend evenings working on homework, helping kids study for tests, and getting ready for the next day where we'll do it all over again. We are a close-knit family but at times I feel like we are so busy that we miss out on really spending any quality time with each other. That is exactly why we need a vacation where we can get back to nature and really be able to slow down and spend time listening to what each other has to say.
I have been to this same area in West Virginia only twice before, but I fell in love with it. My husband had gone there as a child and felt it important and significant enough that he had to take me there and share it with me. The first time he took me there was for our anniversary and it was magical. We stayed in a beautiful log cabin, complete with its own Jacuzzi bath. It was romantic and we so very quiet, there was nothing to interrupt our alone time and it was just what we needed. The second time I went, we had decided to share it with our children, and they were equally amazed with the place. We fished, explored, saw our first Bald Eagle, hiked, and took a tour of the cavern itself. Our kids love doing anything that involves the outdoors, that's why this place was perfect for a short family trip.
This year we are going back because I think nature, peace, and quiet is just what we all need. It has been such a busy year, so many stresses have filled our minds and taken their tolls on our bodies as well. We love the beach, but so many beaches are just too overcrowded at this time of year. I don't want to go any place where there are people everywhere I look, I want to go to a place where I can hear my children laugh, a place where we are not rushed to get from one place to another, a place to get back to the way things used to be. I want rest, and that is exactly what we are going to get with this trip. I think everyone can use a little nature in their lives, I think that's the way life is supposed to be and that's exactly what I want for my children.
