After seeing a segment about hot toys for Christmas on my local morning news, I was so impressed by the description and brief demo of Laser Pegs that I decided to get a set for my kids. These award winning, innovative toys are touted as "the world's only lighted construction set". They are the creation of a dad of twin toddlers, who says he was inspired by Lite Brite and Legos.
Each of these interlocking pieces contains a colored LED light that illuminate (some even flash!) when connected to one of the 2 included power sources. Though the current used is low-voltage, the lighted pieces create a really cool effect that managed to wow even my hard to impress tweens! The clear plastic pieces include straight pegs, t-shapes, squares, wheels and 45 or 90 degree angles, all of which lend themselves to the creation of fun and funky shapes. No boring block towers here! Some of the suggested creations include designs called Robo Mutt and Baja Jumper, but your creations are really only limited by your imagination!
The 72 piece set comes with one power base, and the 60 piece set offers 2 power bases, along with a plastic tray to store the pegs when not in use. All power bases run on AA batteries, which are also included. (Imagine that?!) According to the manufacturer, a high quality LED will run for approximately 100, 000 hours, which means that these toys will provide hours of possibilities for fun and creativity.
The 60 piece set I purchased for my 11 year old son became the hit toy of Christmas Day among my kids and nephews, who range in age from 5 to 16. Even with a house full of brand new toys, everyone wanted to play with the Laser Pegs! My son keeps his on his desk so he can make and remake different designs as the mood strikes him. Not bad for $40!
These sets are recommended for children ages 7 and up. They are available at many sites, including Amazon.com, and prices start at $39.95.
