I am aware of lemon grass as an ingredient in some of my dishes. My turbo chicken will never be complete without it. I like the aroma of this herb emanating from the turbo broiler and the cleansing it gives to the chicken once cook. Also, I use it in my chicken tinola instead of ginger because the latter gives a hard taste on the soup. But I never knew that lemon grass has something to do with cancer as well. Amazing!
An Israeli agriculturalist, Benny Zabidov, grows greenhouses full of lush spices on a pastoral farm in Kfar Yedidya in the Sharon region. He couldn't understand why so many cancer patients from around the country is asking for fresh lemon grass from him. He learned that the doctors of these cancer patients referred him to them to get fresh lemon grass.
The clamor for fresh lemon grass began with a discovery from the researchers at Ben Gurion University or BGU that lemon grass kills cancer cells leaving healthy cells unharmed. The research team was led by Dr. Rivka Ofir and Prof. Yakov Weinstein. They learned that the compound Citral present in the lemon grass is the key component that not only gives the lemony aroma and taste in several herbal plants but it causes cancer cells to commit suicide as well using "apoptosis." Apoptosis is a type of cell death in which the cell uses specialized cellular machinery to kill itself. It is a cell suicide mechanism that enables metazoans to control cell number and eliminate cells that threaten the survival.
The result of this research is indeed very good news not only to cancer patients but to well people too. Lemon grass is very affordable and can be homegrown. Now is high time that we go back to the basics and appreciate the greens we see around us. Findings like this gives hope to patients who are less fortunate who have no money to sustain their medication and for fit people to know that there are prevention from getting sick.
Remember! A drink with as little as one gram of lemon grass contains enough citral to prompt cancer cells to commit suicide in the test tube.
