Looking for a new and different way to spend Halloween this year that the whole family will enjoy? Give Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party a try; it's fun for everyone.
Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party is a special Halloween event that is held at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom on select nights beginning in mid September through the first of November. It runs from 7 PM after the park is closed until midnight and requires the purchase of a separate ticket that allows you access to the party. While the party does not start until 7 PM, they will allow you to start arriving at the park as early as 4 PM, so you can use that extra time to take in as many rides and attractions as you can before the real party starts. The cost for tickets starts at $54.00 per adult with premium days like Halloween night costing a few dollars more. The price for the party includes admission to the Magic Kingdom and use of all the attractions, as well as all the special party-only activities. It costs less than a regular one- day ticket to the park.
One of the things that sets the party apart from a regular visit to the Magic Kingdom is that guests, both adults and children, are invited to come in costume. It is so much fun to dress up and arrive early when the park is still full of regular guests and see the looks you get from everyone, many of whom have no idea that you are there for the party that night. My family has even been stopped and asked to pose for pictures and to sign autographs by people who either think we are crazy or cast members. Some of the cast members we met paid special attention to us, as well, and some got us on rides faster by sending us to special lines.
So, what makes this party so special? Well, in addition to the regular Halloween decorations, they bring out many other cool decorations exclusively for the party as well as mood lighting and special effects. When you arrive at the gate, you are given a trick-or-treat bag and there are stations set up around the park where both the adults and kids can go to collect candy throughout the night. There are extra characters out around the park that are not always seen, especially the Disney Villains. After all, Halloween is their favorite time of the year. The Villains even have their own show on the stage in front of Cinderella's castle and line up to pose for pictures and autographs in front of the castle.
The 2 things that should absolutely not be missed, that are available only during the party, are the "Boo-To-You" Halloween parade and the "Happy Hallowishes: a Grim Grinning Ghosts Spooktacuar in the Sky" fireworks show. The parade begins with a ride through the parade route by the Headless Horseman. During the ride they ask everyone not to use camera flashes or other lighted devices so they do not startle the horse. The result is amazing with hundreds of guests all lined up quietly in the dark and the sound of the horses hooves being the only sound you hear. After his ride is complete, the parade begins and features the Disney Villains and rare characters like the Hitchhiking ghosts from the Haunted Mansion, as well as all your favorite Disney characters, like Mickey Mouse, and Donald Duck, dressed in their Halloween costumes. The fireworks show features Halloween themed music from Disney films and is the best I have ever seen. They break up the show into sections dedicated to a particular character or theme, and the fireworks change and dance along with the different songs as they play. In addition to the incredible fireworks in the sky, they also change the color of the castle several times during the show, and project images on it as well. The soundtrack is amazing and they have added the voices of the Villains to make it all come together perfectly.
Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party is one of my favorite things to do at Disney. It's safe, fun and appropriate for all members of your family. It's a great way to spend Halloween night or celebrate it a little early to put you in the mood. It's one of the few places adults get to have as much fun as the kids, and finally get to trick or treat too.
To buy tickets you can purchase them onlineor call (407) WDISNEY. They limit the tickets sold for each night to keep guest numbers low, so if you are interested make sure you get them early.
Update On Sep 25, 2010: We went to Mickey's Party again on September 21, 2010 and it was better than ever. We walked straight on to almost every ride, including Space Mountain and Thunder Mountain. There were more people than ever before dressed in costume both young and old, which was a blast. We got a ton of candy and the parade and fireworks were spectacular.
The party was by far the highlight of our vacation. The atmosphere in the park was fun and exciting compared to the hustle and bustle we felt in the other parks and strangers interacted and had a great time. The Magic Kingdom comes alive at night and the decorations and music just add to the excitement. We will be definitely doing it again.
