Dan Gilbert is the owner of Quicken Loans Inc, one of the country's largest independent mortgage companies. He purchased the Cleveland Cavaliers from the Gunds and already had with it one of the most marketable names in all of basketball, Lebron James. Gilbert had deep pockets and used them to surround Lebron with the likes of Shaquille O'Neil, Maurice Williams and Antawn Jamison.
Gilbert hoped that with all his spending, he would eventually capture and NBA championship for the ailing city of Cleveland, a city jinxed in all four major sports. Sadly, his "Chosen One"chose to bolt for Miami after spending his first seven seasons in Cleveland and failing to land a championship for Cleveland.
Gilbert was infuriated and so was the entire city. They burned Lebron James jerseys and tore down his giant Nike ad. Gilbert even wrote a scathing open letter which got him fined $100, 000. Let us examine some parts of this letter.
-"As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier." - This statement really adds fuel to the fire as Gilbert points out that their hometown hero has deserted them and went for greener pastures. Lebron was given loyalty, support and admiration by the city of Cleveland and this is what he shows them.
-"You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal." - Long suffering Cleveland fans who haven't sniffed a major sports trophy simply do not deserve another sports tragedy. They had to suffer the wrath of Michael Jordan in the playoffs and lost one of their best players ever, Brad Daugherty due to recurring injuries at the age of 28.
-"You have given so much and deserve so much more." - Lebron was treated like a god by the people of Cleveland and has also been financially rewarded with all the t-shirts, jerseys and bobbleheads that the people of Cleveland have bought.
-"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE" - This is simply letting emotions fall. I do not believe Cleveland has the pieces needed to win one. They would have to swing a lot of trades or tank a few seasons before they could get back to an elite level. Losing Lebron was devastating for them.
"This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become." -Remember Star Wars Episode 3? Obi-Wan told Anakin (who was being burned by lava at the time) that he was the "chosen one"and he was deeply hurt by his betrayal. No doubt that Dan Gilbert feels the same way. When you have paid millions of Dollars to a guy you should at least expect a bit of loyalty in return.
"DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue...." -Nuff said. I could not agree with you better on that Dan.
