Most people had their money on the Miami Heat. Why wouldn't they? You had Lebron James and Dwyane Wade who were two of the top five players in the league. Both also had previous NBA Finals experience. To add to this, Dwyane Wade won a championship at the very expense of the Dallas Mavericks, the team they were now up against. To further put things in Miami's favor, Chris Bosh decided to pack his bags and head to South Beach.
The Dallas Mavericks in the meantime, did not have history on their side. After losing the 2006 Finals to a Shaq and Wade-led team, they exited the playoffs very early the next few years. They even lost a first round match-up against the lowly Golden State Warriors. This gave the Mavericks the label "soft" as well as "chokers." However, Dallas won this year's championship. Let us look some of the reasons this happened.
-Miami did not have depth. Sure any team would love to have a core of Lebron, Wade and Bosh. However, no general manager would be thrilled by an aging Mike Bibby and an over the hill Juwan Howard.
-Miami was overconfident - Miami was celebrating to early when it had big leads and acted as if the game was over. This lead to Dallas comeback victories.
-Dallas was much deeper. Dallas had people like Peja Stojakovic, Brendan Haywood and Jason Terry come off the bench. These players used to be starters on other teams.
-Lack of support - Sure the Miami fans worhip the big three. Outside South Beach was a different story. James was a villain. The once beloved superstar was treated like Anakin Skywalker when he turned heel and became Darth Vader. I could hear Obi Wan tell Lebron how he is a traitor much like Anakin was. Dallas was America's team.
-Miami was distracted - With the media throwing Lebron under the bus 24/7 and Lebron and Wade acting like Degeneration X instead of serious athletes, Miami lost a series they should have won. Lebron and Wade were too busy mocking Nowitzki's illness that they forgot what was at stake.
-Lebron choked again - Lebron was superb against Boston and Chicago and it appeared that Lebron's days as a choker were well behind him. Yet, he choked again when it mattered most. Lebron basically played a subpar series against an ageing and injured Dallas team.
-Nowitzki's willpower - Just like the Green Lantern, Nowitzki's iron will saves the day. Overcoming fatigue, age and injury, Dirk helps Dallas hoist its first championship.
