This may just be the only cookbook you will ever need. It goes well beyond just recipes to include everything you need to know about cooking at home.
The book starts of with the sections Kitchen Know-How, Tools for the Country Cook, and In the Pantry. I have found these especially helpful, because they cover everything you need to know about measurements, utensils, appliances and different techniques and terms used in both baking and cooking. It gives you a (quite extensive) list of ingredients that are good to keep in stock. Everything from flours, grains, and rice, to sweeteners, sauces and herbs. All staples you will need to have on hand to prepare most kinds of foods.
The recipes are all really easy to follow and fun to make. There are starters, salads, breads, endless arrays of entrees, and deserts. There is even a section just on beverages, including instructions on brewing your own beer. Most recipes are your traditional southern style country cooking, but there are more modern ones thrown in, along with many that focus on lighter, healthier cooking. Some of my favorite recopies are the cranberry relish, icebox cookies, pumpkin orange cheesecake, and the garlicky roast chicken.
There is a section devoted just to the art or preserving foods. It gives you instructions on canning, freezing, drying, and pickling foods. The author even teaches you how to make crafts for your home and successful ways to grow a garden.
Really, I don't think it would be possible to include any more information into just one book. It really is incredible!
