I recently purchased an 8500GT to use in a new PC of mine, hoping that this would be a decent entry-level 8-series video card for modest gaming and media playing, but was pretty disappointed in its performance. Sure, it's very cheap, has 256MB of VRAM, and is DirectX10 capable, but those are the only good features about it. I averaged temperatures of 30-35C idle and 40-45C load on stock cooling whilst testing this video card, and also experienced disappointing framerates while playing games on mid-to-high resolutions. I consulted other people who'd bought this same card and they had similar results.
Overall, it's not very good, but probably the best card for its price, and is okay for media playing and light gaming. For more hardcore gamers, this is definitely not the way to go. And if you do buy this card, be sure that your computer has sufficient cooling.
