I was gifted an Apple Macbook Pro this birthday. As an engineering student, I require a moderately advanced computing system at the least to aid academics. The mac has performed well the two months I have used it. It supports a plethora of operations like web development in java, C++, Ruby, Image manipulation and nearly every possible game that can be played on such an interface and delivers impressive results. It hardly takes a couple of minutes to boot and has no history of system crashes so far. For hardcore programmers, the shell is a piece of art. You can also take your mind off worries like viruses, malicious software, spyware and the like because the OS is comparable to Linux. The keyboard is excellent with adequate palm space.
One of cons would be its resolution which is not as good as the Sony Vaio. Then comes its price which is pretty steep but the laptop, as a whole is one of the best in its category. If you have the dough and want a high-end, compact computing system, I'd suggest you go for the Macbook Pro.
