With my mom in a nursing home rehab, the ambience for eating isn't always the best. But in my mom's nursing home, there is a place that we escape to. It is attached to the nursing home, and is located in the retirement center's atrium. (The retirement center is an exclusive Senior Living Resort, and the differences between it and the nursing home are incredible.)
The atrium is furnished with lots of huge plants and trees, and it makes you feel like you are in an outdoor courtyard. It has games available, a fountain, and lots of sitting areas. After taking my mom there one afternoon in her wheelchair, I had a good idea. I decided that we could use the atrium as our getaway for our snack time.
So recently, on a Sunday evening, I surprised her, by picking up some things from the deli at Publix. I packed some drinks, plates, napkins and utensils and then kidnapped her.
For the finishing touches, I put a lace tablecloth on the table, and a beautiful multicolored candle holder with a flameless candle. I figured that with all the seniors around, they probably wouldn't want a lighted flame for safety reasons, but this little insert (exactly the size of a regular tea light) was perfect!
We had potato salad, sliced Havarti cheese, fresh fruit (strawberries, bananas, and oranges), and cheesecake. It was delightful!
The Flameless Tea Lights have a LED bulb shaped just like a flame, and it flickers slightly! The great thing about them is that there is no smoke or fire, so they are safe for children and the elderly. It has a simple push on and off switch, and is powered by a replaceable lithium battery that is good for approximately 100 hours. These flameless candles are cool to the touch, and will stay lit, even in a draft. They were an excellent solution to our situation.
(About the only negative I would mention, is that I feel that the light could be a little brighter, because they do not shine quite bright enough for some candle holders that I have placed them in. But for others, they are just fine.)
My mom was in her gown and bathrobe, but we felt like royalty, as we ate in the atrium at our elegant, candle lit table! It's the simple things in life that are often the most wonderful! It's all about making memories.
