Anne of Green Gables was my favorite book as a child. I was lucky enough to be introduced to the book before I saw any movies or other adaptations of the story, so I got the classic story in the classic form.
This protagonist of the book is a girl named Anne Shirley. The book begins with Anne, the orphan, being taken home by an elderly brother and sister who were originally looking to adopt a boy. Anne charms everyone with her innocence, wit and the way she thinks about the world. Seeing the world through Anne's eyes is truly a memorable experience, and anyone who reads this book gets to do just that.
Anne's adventures involve meeting her dear friend, Diana and Gilbert, the boy who teases her through her school days but who will eventually grow up to be her husband.
I love this book because of its simplicity and the way it shows the beauty of everyday life and in everyday people. I always thought of myself as an Anne, romantic and just a little bit misunderstood.
No, I never did grow out of my love for this book. I will always keep it near me and consider it an old friend.
