The Hotel Nevada and Gambling Hall is an inexpensive, fun, and unique place to stay if you are passing through Ely Nevada. It may not look like much from the outside, and maybe the casino is not too impressive if you are jaded from the spectacles in Las Vegas, but I (and many others) really like this place.
The staff in the hotel are very friendly. The room rates are very cheap and the free WiFi works well. The most striking features are the murals, paintings, antiques, knick knacks, and memorabilia scattered throughout the hotel and casino. There is a 1947 Indian Motorcycle on display along with stuffed wild animals, mining equipment, etc. The Hotel Nevada does not take itself too seriously, and it seems to put most of its guests into a humorous mood.
This is not a 'Luxury Hotel', the lobby / casino are smoky, and if you are traveling with children then maybe the Holiday Inn Express would be a more appropriate place to stay. Some of the beds might be a little past their useful life and some of the bathrooms are a bit small, but it is an interesting and historic building.
When you check in, you are given coupons for a free Margarita in the casino bar and a beer in a tavern across the street. There is a 24 hour restaurant where I had a very decent dinner and breakfast. A fairly modern elevator serves the six story hotel.
Ely is at the east end of the the Loneliest Road in America portion of US Highway 50. Ely also has a Train Museum and I believe one of Nevada's legal brothels.
